MRSA: Understanding and Controlling Acquired Infection

Written to support the Open College of the North West these learning materials are a superb and unique tool for anyone researching, studying or just wishing to understand how MRSA developed and why it is resistant to modern antibiotics.

Available to schools, colleges, universities and the general public

The Course
The qualification is aimed at anyone employed in an environment and job role where there could be a risk of infection or the spread of infection. Examples include:
Care home staff
Nursing home staff
General staff in hospitals
People who care for others in their own home or in the community (Including voluntary workers)

The book splits into 3 sections:

The Agents of Infections:
The two main micro-organisms, bacteria and viruses, their differences and the conditions they need to grow. The section also covers evolution and mutation in bacteria and how it can lead to new strains which may be resistant to antibiotics.

Transmission of Pathogens, Infection Prevention and Control:
The portals of entry and exit into the body of pathogens and the infection control procedures which should be followed to reduce the risk.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus:
The specific strains of staphylococcus which are resistant to one or more conventional antibiotics, why MRSA has become a hospital “superbug” and how it has become resistant to antibiotics.

Delivery Model
This programe has been developed to run as full-cost provision. The recommended model supported by approved support materials is either one full day or two half days.
